On July 21, we got word that Google was experimenting with a new, more robust “Explore” feature within Google Maps. While there wasn’t any word at the time when the feature could start rolling out to everyone, luckily it looks like we don’t have to wait long after all. The new feature has just been officially announced by Google.
With the new Explore feature, the button will now be on the Map main screen, and therefore easily accessible. Once you activate it, Explore Nearby will bring up points of interest around you based on your time of day searching, as well as some other key elements, to populate a list with the places you’re most likely to actually visit.
The new feature will even change the search results based on the weather conditions.
What’s more, Google has taken the liberty of including a bold new look to Explore, something far cleaner and sleeker than the previous version. While the new Explore Nearby is meant to make searching a destination, or exploring somewhere before you even get there, easier, it’s not done just because you get to wherever you want to explore. It’ll keep you up to date with reviews and other important information while you’re there, too.
It’s currently rolling out to Android users now, so keep an eye out for it.
