Google Maps is not just about getting directions from one spot to the other. Google has been working to improve the platform so people can find new places, too.

And now, following announcements at Google I/O, the company has just unveiled a variety of new features for the service that make finding new spots even easier, and sharing those sites with your friends for good measure. That includes a new Explore tab that is designed to show you events, activities, and dining hotspots around you. There will also be trending lists, so you can see what spots around you are lighting up people’s interests.

“The redesigned Explore tab will be your hub for everything new and interesting nearby. When you check out a particular area on the map, you’ll see dining, event, and activity options based on the area you’re looking at. Top trending lists like the Foodie List show you where the tastemakers are going, and help you find new restaurants based on information from local experts, Google’s algorithms, and trusted publishers like The Infatuation and others.”

Google is working on a “Match” system, too. So if you select a venue users will see a number, which is meant to give a visual cue as to how well a user might like the place. Google will determine this based on the places you’ve visited in the past, what you’ve rated, and your own drinks/food preferences you’ve added to Maps.

If you long-press on a venue, you will be able to add that place to a list and share it with your friends, which will then make it possible for them to quickly rate and comment on the establishment, too.

Finally, there is a “For You” tab, which is designed to show you what’s going on in neighborhoods and communities you’re interested in. So if a new restaurant opens in a place you’re interested in, For You will let you know.

These new features will be rolling out to Android and iOS users in the near future.
