Google unveiled Google Lens last year which brought the company’s machine learning prowess to photos and images. However, Google Lens has been limited to Photos and Assistant on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL since it was first unveiled.

Google is now expanding Lens to more devices. The company is rolling out Google Lens support in Google Photos for Android and iOS users in the coming weeks, though it is only going to be available for English-language users. Additionally, Google will be rolling out Lens within Assistant to compatible flagship Android devices in the next few weeks. There’s no word here from Google on which devices are supported, but its likely that if you own a recent flagship device from Samsung or LG running Oreo, you should be covered.

Google has also made some improvements to Lens since it was first unveiled. Lens is now able to create contacts and events from a photo in a single tap and has also gained the ability to highlight and select parts of a text in an image. In the coming weeks, it would also get better at identifying different breeds of animals and plants.

Our Take

Despite having Google Lens on my Pixel 2 XL for almost four months now, I have hardly used it more than a couple of times. While it is an impressive feature to show off, it has not turned out to be of much use in real life, at least for me. What about you? Have you tried Google Lens yet? Do you find it useful?
