Google has started sending out invitations for an event to be held in India on September 15th, where apparently it will be announcing the first batch of handsets under its Android One program. The invitation image comes with the tagline “Block your Date” and does not reveal anything about the event.

Google had unveiled its Android One program back at Google I/O in June this year. Under this program, the company will be teaming up with many Chinese and Indian OEMs to release $100 Android devices running a near stock build of Android. These devices will be updated directly by Google and will have little to almost no carrier or OEM customization.

Fragmentation has already been one of the biggest problems in the Android ecosystem. While bigger OEMs actively update their devices, Chinese OEMs release their handsets with a very old version of Android and then ditch it soon after without even updating it once. By teaming up with such OEMs, Google is trying to nip the fragmentation issue of Android right in the bud.  As of now, Google has teamed up with Karbonn, Micromax and Spice in India for its Android One program.

It is expected that the head of Android at Google, Sundar Pichai, himself will be present at the launch of the Android One event in India on September 15th as well.
