Remember Google Glass Explorer Edition? It seemed like Google had abandoned the project since there was complete silence about it from the company over the last two years. However, today, Google has announced the Glass Enterprise Edition. 

In the two years of radio silence from Google on Glass, the company has been working with business to help them incorporate Glass into their workflow.

As Google notes in its announcement, mechanics at GE — one of the early adopters of Google Glass — have been using Google Glass to assemble and repair engines. Since the prism display on the Glass is able to show the relevant information to mechanics right in their line of sight, they don’t always need to refer to the manual which ultimately saves them time and makes them more efficient. The integration of Google Glass into their workflow has not only made their lives easier by reducing the number of errors but also help improve their efficiency by 8-12 percent.

Apart from GE, more than 50 other companies have also adopted Google Glass into their workflow, including Volkswagen, The Boeing Company, and Dignity Health. Now, Google is making the Glass Enterprise Edition available to more businesses through its network of partners.

Below is how Google Glass has helped improved the efficiency of DHL employees:

DHL’s employees have a supply chain process called “order picking” where they fulfill orders by scanning items from racks before moving them into totes or bins on carts to be shipped. Using a solution from Ubimax with Glass , they now receive real-time instructions about where items have to be placed on the carts with the help of visual aids. With their hands now free of paper instructions, pickers can work far more efficiently and comfortably, and DHL estimates that they have increased supply chain efficiency by 15%.

This is not the same Glass hardware which Google first debuted over two years ago. In the time since then, Google has worked with its partners to make Glass lighter, customised it according to their needs, and made it more comfortable to wear as well. The performance and battery life (up to 8 hours) have also been improved, with the camera also being bumped to an 8MP sensor. The new Google Glass Enterprise Edition is also compatible with a wide range of frames, lenses, and even OSHA-certified safety shields and glasses for the factory floor.

With Google now making Glass Enterprise Edition official, companies are now at the liberty to talk openly about how they use Glass to help improve their workflow.
