Google has confirmed in a statement to 9to5Google that it will fix the poor RAM management issues on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with a software update in the coming weeks.

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL suffer from serious memory management issues. They cannot even run 2-3 apps at the same time in the background.

Many users have blamed this on the devices only coming with 4GB RAM, especially since this issue was also present on the Pixel 2 XL from last year to a certain extent. A common scenario where this occurs is when one is playing music on Spotify or any other music app and opens the camera app. This will lead to Spotify being killed in the background and music stopping.

We’re rolling out a software update in the coming weeks to keep background apps from being prematurely closed in certain situations.

Google, however, thinks that it can solve the issue with an upcoming update. But if you read the statement, it seems clear that the fix will only work in “certain situations.” That’s definitely not confidence inspiring, though given just how bad the multitasking performance on the Pixel 3 series is right now, any improvement would be welcomed by frustrated Pixel 3 users.

There’s no word from Google as to when the update would be rolled out except for “in the coming weeks.” Given that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are still running the September security patch, I’d say this fix will only make its way with the December security release next month.
