During Alphabet’s recent earnings call, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that there will be 11 Daydream VR compatible handsets on sale by the end of this year.
Pichai did not reveal the name of any devices, though 11 is not a particularly huge number as well.
As of now, there are already around five Daydream compatible smartphones in the market, including the Pixel, Moto Z, and Huawei’s Mate 9 Pro.
Samsung has already confirmed that it will be adding Daydream support to the Galaxy S8 with a future software update, with the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 also likely being Daydream compatible out of the box. The addition of these two devices takes the total number of supported devices to seven. Not to forget, Google’s upcoming Pixel 2 will also be Daydream compatible when it launches later this year.
In the end, this means that there are 3 more devices which will be unveiled this year with Daydream support. I’d wager that Huawei’s upcoming Mate handset, the Moto Z2 Force, and the LG V30 are the other three handsets that will be Daydream-compatible.
Despite the total number of Daydream smartphones reaching double digits by the end of this year, the platform is yet to take off. In fact, the number of Daydream compatible apps is still significantly behind Samsung’s Gear VR, HTC Vive, and even Oculus.
Google highlights all Daydream compatible devices on its VR website so you can easily find all VR ready handsets easily.
