Yesterday, Google announced an update for the Google Calendar app for Android. The update brings one of the most requested features to the app – the ability to customise the event and calendar colours directly. Post the update, Android users can assign different colours to calendars right from the app, and even specify a different color to just a particular meeting or event.

The update also brings subtle UI updates that give a polished look to the Calendar app. Other major changes include a new re-designed date and time pickers, more options when settings an option to repeat, and a re-designed timezone picker. The Google Calendar update will be available to all Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. However, the custom color events feature will only be available for Android 4.1 or higher devices.

Google is rolling out the Calendar update in phases, so you might not see the update instantly on your device. If you cannot wait for the update to be available on your device, you can download and install the APK manually as well.
