Earlier today, Google issued a statement clarifying the screen issues related to the Pixel 2 XL. The company will be rolling out a software update to offer a new ‘saturated’ display mode and to boost consumer confidence in the handsets, it also extended their warranty to two years.
However, Google’s statement did not talk about the blue tint issue on the Pixel 2 XL. As seen in OLED panels from a few years ago, viewing the Pixel 2 XL’s display from anything but the perfect angle will lead to a noticeable blue tint. This would not have been a big deal in itself but the perfect viewing angle for the Pixel 2 XL’s display is so small that the blue tint is going to be almost always visible.
Since so many people kept asking about the blue tint issue, Seang Chau, VP of engineering at Google, has provided the following explanation about the matter:
We want to add some info regarding the blue tint that some of you have been asking about. The slight blue tint is inherent in the display hardware and only visible when you hold the screen at a sharp angle. All displays are susceptible to some level of color shift (e.g. red, yellow, blue) when viewing from off angles due to the pixel cavity design. Similar to our choice with a cooler white point, we went with what users tend to prefer and chose a design that shifts blue.
This basically means that there is nothing Google can do about the blue tint on the Pixel 2 XL’s display. The issue likely stems from the polarizer that Google is using on the POLED panel on the Pixel 2 XL. If your Pixel 2 XL has severe blue tint, you can try and get a replacement since various Pixel units have varying level of blue tint. And if you find this blue tint a deal breaker, you can always return your Pixel 2 XL.
