Google today announced a bunch of developer focused improvements to Google Assistant in a bid to make its assistant more useful and engaging for end users. The update expands Assistant’s availability to more third-party apps and international languages.
Firstly, Google is introducing two new categories to Assistant: What’s new and What’s Trending. These two categories will be automatically updated to show apps compatible with Google Assistant and Actions on Google. In addition, autocomplete is now available for the app directory to help users in finding the apps they need.
App directory is also gaining support for subcategories for easier discoverability of apps. Now when you click on a category like “Food and Drink” additional sub-categories like “Order Food” and “View a menu” are also shown.
There is a new Implicit Discovery option as well now. This will allow users to use features of an app without explicitly calling their name. So, for example, “book an appointment to fix my bike” would lead to the concerned app automatically booking an appointment for you.
There is also a new “For Families” badge aimed at making it easier to discover apps meant for users of all age. Then, Actions on Google is also gaining support for international languages like Spanish, Italian, Indian English, Portuguese, and more.
With Google Home gaining popularity and Assistant coming to other devices, Google is now making it possible to complete an interaction that starts from your Home and ends on your smartphone. The company has also made other improvements to allow developers to build more personalised apps which includes the ability to link an account during an interaction and a cancel message when a user cancels an input.
