Google and Lenovo have teamed up to announce the release of the first consumer Project Tango smartphone at CES 2016. The handset is still in prototype phase, but will be launched to consumers sometime later this year.

Compared to a traditional smartphone, a Project Tango smartphone features additional sensors and computer vision software that allows it to act as a gateway to bring virtual reality into the physical world.

The specs of the handset remain completely unknown for now, and since it is still in prototype phase, the final unit of handset might not even look like as shown in the above image.

Further, Google is giving developers the opportunity to submit their ideas for apps and games that can really show off the augmented reality technology inside the first Project Tango smartphone. The best ideas will be selected by Google and provided with enough resources and funding to turn the idea into reality. The final apps might also be featured on the final smartphone from Lenovo whenever it ships later this year.
