A new update to the Google Play Games app was accidentally announced by Google, before being taken down for some reason. Perhaps Google wants to wait until the GDC (Game Developers Conference) which kicks off later today in San Francisco. However, the entirety of Google’s press release is now in the public domain revealing all that is new with the latest update.
As expected, most of these features are developer centric, so the common public might not find a lot to be excited with these new changes. The most notable of the new features though is the ability to send virtual items from within the games to other players, which Google calls ‘Game Gifts’.
Other features include multiplayer support on iOS, an update to the Play Games Unity plug-in and the inclusion of Play Games statistics on the Google Play Developer console. To further boost developer revenue, Google will bring Analytics right within the AdMob interface to understand how the game is growing, which ultimately allows developers to target a specific set of audience with in-app ads.
We expect Google to make the official announcement soon, at which point the Android Developers Blog could republish the original press release.
