Samsung has just announced pricing and availability for their third generation Galaxy Tab family. They all come out next month, on the 7th of July, so let’s run through the devices. The smallest member, the 7 inch model, will cost just $199. For that amount of cash you get a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution display however, which is something you’ll probably not want to deal with.

Stepping things up to $299 will get you the 8 inch model, pictured above. It has a higher resolution 1280 x 800 pixel resolution screen, Samsung’s own dual core 1.5 GHz Exynos processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, and … it’s just nice. Trust me on this, I’ve held it. I’m not sure it’s worth $299 though.

Finally there’s the $399 10.1 inch model that you shouldn’t consider. Full stop.

It has the same resolution as the 8 inch model, it uses an Intel CPU, and it feels horrible to hold. For that amount of money, do yourself a favor and buy an iPad mini OR buy the 8 inch Galaxy Tab 3 and a really big microSD card. You’ll thank for this. Friends don’t let friends buy 10 inch Android tablets.

But here’s the real truth. Google is going to announce a sequel to the Nexus 7 at some point during the next few months. It’s going to have a super high resolution screen (at least 1080p), it’s going to have either a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro or Snapdragon 600 (rumors are contradictory), and it being a Nexus means you’ll always be running the latest and greatest version of Android.

If you want an Android tablet, buy that one.
