With the Galaxy S7 and Note 7 launch behind it, rumors about Samsung’s next big Galaxy, the Galaxy S8, have started doing the rounds of the internet. As per The Korea Herald, Samsung plans on completely doing away with a flat screen variant of its flagship handset for 2017.
Instead, the company plans on launching both variants — 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch — of the Galaxy S8 with a curved screen. A key factor behind this decision from Samsung in the improvement in yield rates of its double-edged screen.
Sources said the company has already started securing display panels in two sizes — 5.1 inch and 5.5 inch — from its own display-making unit Samsung Display, the world’s sole producer of double-edged screens.
With both variants of the Galaxy S8 now rumored to come with a curved screen, it makes little sense for Samsung to refer to them as the Galaxy S8 and S8 edge. Perhaps, the company — just like Apple — will rename the phones to Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. It also remains to be screen how steep the curves on these phones will be. With the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung reduced the degree of the curve to maximise the area for the S Pen. Maybe with the Galaxy S8, it will offer the two variants with varying degree of curved screen?
