The existence of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has been confirmed by the folks over at Sam Mobile thanks to their insider sources. The handset will reportedly bear the model number SM-G800 and feature a midrange hardware, which is no surprise really.
According to this leak, the smartphone will feature a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED display with a 720p resolution, a quad core Snapdragon 400 chipset (unconfirmed), an 8-megapixel camera, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and Android 4.4 KitKat. Other expected specs include a built-in IR Blaster, IP67 certification for water and dust resistance and a 2,100 mAh battery.
The sources haven’t confirmed if this mini variant of the Samsung flagship will contain features like the heart rate monitor or the fingerprint scanner, but it seems unlikely given that the mini smartphones are usually budget devices (unless it’s something like the Xperia Z1 Compact).
There isn’t a lot of information on the release date or the pricing at the moment. But if previous rumors are anything to go by, the handset should launch by mid-2014 with a sub $400 price tag. From the looks of it, this doesn’t sound like the best ‘mini’ handset, but Samsung could make the most of it given its marketing prowess, which companies like HTC and Sony do not have.
