Samsung has just unveiled the Galaxy Note 7, its latest flagship Note to take on the new Nexus handsets from Google and Apple’s upcoming new iPhones. Wondering how the Galaxy Note 7 stacks up to its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 6?
Well, there was no Galaxy Note 6. Despite what its name suggests, the Galaxy Note 7 is the sixth flagship iteration of the company’s Galaxy Note smartphone. Its predecessor was the Galaxy Note 5 that launched in 2015.
Why the sudden name change though? Samsung had announced back in July that it will be calling its next Note as the Galaxy Note 7. The company is making this change to ensure that the Note 7 complements its flagship Galaxy S handsets, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, instead of competing with them. It will also help in unifying its product portfolio. Secondly, the company does not want to reduce any confusion in the mind of consumers regarding its high-end product portfolio. After all, many consumers can think that the Galaxy Note 6 is older than the Galaxy S7/edge and the upcoming iPhone 7 because of its numbering, even though that is not the case.
