There are rumors floating around the internets that say Samsung is going to introduce a new portfolio of products called “Mega”. The first two devices in this family will be the Mega 5.8 and Mega 6.3; the numbers correspond to screen size.

According to SamMobile, here are the specifications of the 5.8 inch model: Starting with the screen itself, it’s going to be a disappointing 960 x 540 pixel panel. That means it’ll have a PPI of roughly 190. That’s worse than the newly announced 4.7 inch Galaxy Win’s 800 x 480 pixel panel. As for the insides: 1.4 GHz dual core chip, 1.5 GB of RAM, 8 megapixel rear facing camera, 2 megapixel front facing camera, and a 2,600 mAh battery.

The phone itself is supposed to measure 164 mm × 83.8 mm × 9.7 mm. To put that into some perspective, Samsung’s largest smartphone currently on sale, the 5.5 inch Note II, comes in at 151.1 mm x 80.5 mm x 9.4 mm.

Now I totally understand where Samsung wants to go with “Mega”. Later this year, likely in September, the company is going to announce the 5.9 inch Galaxy Note III. It’s going to be a ludicrously expensive flagship device that will be out of reach for people in emerging countries.

And the Mega family will fix that.

Samsung did the exact same thing with the 5.5 inch Note II when they created a budget 5 inch model without a stylus called the Grand. By the time I left Bangkok in late March, there will billboards everywhere for that device.
