The Samsung Galaxy Beam 2 smartphone has just been launched by Chinese carrier China Mobile. This is the second generation projector-based device from Samsung with the original Galaxy Beam seeing a very limited release back in 2012.
It hasn’t been mentioned if the handset will be launched in global markets, but since it has been only announced for China now, it might remain exclusive to the region for a while. However, the launch of a unique projector-based phone like this one might be interesting in European and neighboring Asian countries as well.
The Galaxy Beam 2 also features a 4.66 inch WVGA display, a 5-megapixel camera on the back, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, a 2,600 mAh battery and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean running last year’s iteration of the TouchWiz UI. So apart from the projector which can only transmit content in WVGA resolution, the hardware of the Galaxy Beam 2 is pretty sub-par.
The projector is located on the top edge of the smartphone, which is a convenient placement, and will come in handy for quick presentations while on the go. The idea behind the Galaxy Beam 2 is very novel, although we feel the company has missed a trick by packing unflattering hardware specs with the device.
