Nexus 5 microSD card slot

Frustrated by frequently running out of space on his Nexus 5 and the lack of a microSD card slot on the handset, Reddit user Sockpockets went ahead and used his soldering skills to solder an adapter to the motherboard.

The process is pretty tricky and not for the faint hearted: It involves removing the back cover of the Nexus 5, fold the lower daughter board, rearrange the speaker assembly and antenna cables, and then solder the adapter to the board.

Surprisingly, the OS — Marshmallow — recognised the microSD card without any issues and the new fusion storage in Android 6.0 makes it possible to install unlimited number of apps, games and store media on the phone without worrying about anything.

Obviously with the limited amount of space available inside a phone, it was not possible to put the back cover back on the Nexus 5. Showing his creativity, Sockpockets used a TPU case to hold the phone together. While not really a realistic solution, it definitely works for Sockpockets.

Here’s hoping that Google saves future potential Nexus owners from such frustration by including a microSD card slot on future Nexus handsets.
