Ron Louks has been involved in the mobile industry since 2007 when he worked at Sony Ericsson’s Research and Development Lab. In 2010, he moved over to HTC to help guide them through the future. Less than two years later, he left that position and has since held a couple of executive roles at various other companies. Today, BlackBerry is announcing that they’ve hired Ron, and that he’ll “focus on BlackBerry’s long-term product roadmap, including hardware, software and design, as well as the Company’s joint development efforts.”
What does this have to do with Android? Ron probably knows quite a bit about HTC’s future. Now granted, Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO, allegedly changes the company’s roadmap every 90 days, but that doesn’t mean Ron doesn’t at least have an inkling of where HTC wants to go. There’s a good chance that when Ron left HTC in early 2012, he had to sign some sort of document saying he couldn’t work at a competing handset maker for another year. Well, that year is now up.
Speaking about BlackBerry, here’s a serious question: Why don’t they pull an Amazon and just fork Android? They should bake all their enterprise security features in Google’s software, sell it to enterprise and government, and let that be their future. Sure, their devices wouldn’t come with access to Google’s Play Store, but why would that matter on a work phone?
Anyway, good luck, Ron, you’re going to need it!
