Final-Fantasy-VII

The back cover of Final Fantasy VII Jewel Case reads, ‘Quite possibly the best game ever made.’ A statement that has been echoed throughout history with the game receiving many awards, accolades and commendations over the years. Launched for the PlayStation 1 as part of the Final Fantasy series, it is expected to be remastered for the PlayStation 4, and while the world collectively holds it’s breath for the PS4 launch, the game has made it’s way onto Android.

As waves of nostalgia and excitement take over, there are a few things to note, namely that Square Enix themselves have clarified that the game was released with a bug. In the Play Store app info, Square Enix clarified the nature of the bug by saying, “Depending on the terrain and timing of the action, the buggy, submarines, airships, and other modes of transportation may cease to move when the player embarks or disembarks.” The only solution so far, seems to have multiple save points and re-launch the game each time a bug is encountered.

Some other points to note would be the 4GB space requirement before installation, though Final Fantasy VII only takes up 2GB of space when installed properly. Early reviews have also pointed-out that the colours for cut scenes are a bit off, and that the game is not functional on all Android devices. So far, it can be played on Sony smartphones, Nexus devices (Nexus 4 and newer) and Samsung Galaxy S5 and newer devices — all devices must be running Android 4.3 and higher.

If the bugs, the memory and colour issues have not tainted your desire to once again re-live nostalgia, then the price might be the last deterrent. Priced at $15.99 on the Play Store, the 19 year old game is not classified as cheap.

From a nostalgic perspective, Final Fantasy VII will always have a special place in the hearts of all it touched, but given the drawbacks the game is facing on the Android platform, it might just not be worth purchasing until updates roll around and bugs are cleared.
