Android O

Yesterday, Google dropped the first Developer Preview of Android O. The latest version of Android comes with little user-facing changes, with most of the improvements being related to improving the overall experience of using the OS. In its announcement, Google noted that the first Developer Preview of Android O will not be available through the Android beta program because it is buggy and has stability issues.

As with Nougat, Google has also provided a timeframe as to when we should expect the various Developer Preview builds of Android O to drop and when the final version of the OS will be available. In total, Android O will have four Developer Preview builds, with the second one dropping in the middle of May — possibly after Google I/O, while the third one with the finalised APIs will drop in June.

Android O Release Cycle

The final DP build will release in July, with the final version of the OS scheduled to release in Q3 to AOSP and ecosystem. So realistically, we should see OEMs start updating their devices to Android O from Q4 of this year.

Google will start offering Android O through its Android beta program to interested beta testers with the DP2 build, which is still almost two months away at this point. Considering how buggy and unstable the first DP of Android O is, waiting for the next build makes a lot of sense. If you impatient to get your hands on Android O, though, you can always manually flash the factory image on your compatible Pixel or Nexus device.
