Facebook on Thursday, June 4, officially unveiled a brand new initiative to get its Android app onto more devices, and make it easier to use on handsets that might not be the most powerful or be connected to the strongest networks.

It’s called Facebook Lite, and the social networking giant officially unveiled the new app via its Newsroom today. With Facebook Lite, the experience has been trimmed down quite a bit, with the app providing access to only the News Feed, photos, status updates, notifications, and more. The official announcement doesn’t say whether or not the Messenger experience will be included in the slimmed app.

Facebook says that its Lite app weighs in at only 1MB, so it’s easier than ever to install and load on a smartphone or tablet.

Facebook confirmed the rollout will happen initially across Asia, with the rollout beginning today in that part of the world. Down the road, Facebook Lite will launch in Latin America, Africa and across Europe.
