The OnePlus 5T is still relatively new in the market and is perhaps one of the best Android phones to buy right now. In terms of the features it brings to the table, Face Unlock appears to be a key highlight, given that it’s a first for the lineup. A new report claims that OnePlus’ implementation of this feature could be infringing on a handful of patents held by American company Sensible Vision.

The co-founder and CEO of the company, George Brostoff, is believed to have claimed that this technology is nothing new and that they’ve been offering this “for years”. It’s unlikely that the company will file a patent infringement suit against OnePlus, although the company is believed to have spoken to its legal counsel on the matter already.

One of the patents that OnePlus is seemingly infringing on is Sensible Vision’s face illumination technology, although the company believes that some other patents could be involved. Perhaps an out-of-court settlement could be ideal for OnePlus given that it cannot afford another issue on its hands.

Each OnePlus device launch comes with a new controversy as we have seen already. It will be interesting to see what OnePlus has to say on the matter, and if it will acknowledge these claims. It is important to note that Sensible Vision’s patents might only be protected in the U.S. So even if OnePlus was found to be infringing on some of them, the company will only have to cease sales in the U.S. This wouldn’t affect the company’s global sales, which comfortably makes up for more than the company’s American sales figures.
