Eureka Labs is currently working to bring AI teaching assistants to students as an education platform, founder Andrej Karpathy revealed on July 17.

With years of experience on his back, Karpathy announced in a post on X that Eureka Labs will become an “AI native,” implying that the project will be built using recent advancements in artificial intelligence and generative AI as its foundation.

Already registered as a limited liability company in Delaware on June 21, Eureka Labs aims to design AI assistants that will operate with human teachers to create course materials that enable “anyone to learn anything.” Karpathy clarified that real teachers will still be responsible for planning the materials, which will only be “supported, leveraged, and scaled” by AI assistants.

This technology comes at a momentous time when several studies have shown that AI teaching assistants can improve some students’ grades.

Starting small

Eureka Labs plans to launch its flagship product as a smaller version of its AI teaching assistant. Called LLM101n, Karpathy explained that this pioneer product is an AI course that can guide undergraduate students in training their models.

“Our first product will be the world’s obviously best AI course, LLM101n. This is an undergraduate-level class that guides the student through training their own AI, very similar to a smaller version of the AI Teaching Assistant itself,” Karpathy wrote.

He added that the course materials will be made available on the company’s website, which was linked in a reply. Presently, the website is bare bones, but renovations can be expected as soon as Eureka Labs becomes operational.

Karpathy also said that they will be running the product in in-person classes as well.

‘Culmination of passion’

Before deciding to build his own company, Karpathy worked with big names and honed his expertise in AI.

After teaching deep learning for computer vision at Stanford University, he became one of the co-founders of OpenAI, one of the leading AI companies worldwide, in 2015.

Nevertheless, this only lasted two years, and he soon decided to join Tesla and lead his computer vision team. Later, with his guidance, they developed the Tesla Autopilot, an advanced driving assistance system that uses cameras to collect environmental data and performs driving tasks, such as cruise control and automatic steering. This technology has made self-driving features possible in Tesla’s cars.

In 2022, he returned to OpenAI and worked with another team on a project associated with ChatGPT. However, this was only temporary, as he eventually resigned from his leadership position in February.

Now, Eureka Labs is underway, and Karpathy believes it is the culmination of his passion for AI and education for more than two decades. “All of my work combining the two so far has only been part-time, as side quests to my ‘real job,’ so I am quite excited to dive in and build something great, professionally and full-time,” he added.

When asked about the reason behind the company’s name, he explained that his goal has been to help everyone achieve their “eureka” moment.

Besides his upcoming business, Karpathy is currently working with his Zero-to-Hero AI series, which serves as a beginner’s guide for students in building neural networks from scratch in code. He also posts lectures on large language models and AI-related topics on his YouTube channel once in a while.
