The Galaxy S8 sure is an impressive phone, but the lack of a dual camera setup has been a disappointment for many. Now, photos of some Galaxy S8+ prototype units have leaked on the internet which indicates that Samsung was toying around with the idea of using a dual-camera setup on its 2017 flagship handset.
The prototype unit also lacks a fingerprint scanner at the back thereby confirming previous rumors of Samsung’s intention of using a fingerprint scanner that could be embedded into the display. The company, however, could not do so because the technology from Synaptics was not ready in time.
The prototype Galaxy S8+ unit carries the same model number as the final Galaxy S8+ unit: SM-G955F. It has a dual camera setup at the rear, with a heart rate scanner and a LED flash sitting below it.
With Apple debuting a dual camera setup with the iPhone 7 Plus last year, its understandable as to why Samsung wanted to use a similar setup on the Galaxy S8+. However, reports from Korea suggested that the company ditched the idea due to the ISP simply not being ready to handle such a camera setup.
While Samsung could not embed a fingerprint scanner into the display of the Galaxy S8 or use a dual camera setup on its + sibling, it is likely that we will see the company use these technologies on the Galaxy Note 8 later this year.
