Yesterday, the Google Play edition Galaxy S4 and the HTC One went on sale on the Play Store, much to the delight of stock Android lovers out there. While these handsets are still running on stock Android, they have minor differences including a re-designed Camera app.
The new camera app was previously caught running on a Nexus 4 running a test build of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Compared to the camera app on the Nexus 4, the Galaxy S4 and One Google Play edition app does not offer any additional features. It only has a slightly re-designed UI, which improves usability.
While Google has not released the Camera app for any other handset, the APK has been duly extracted by someone from the Android community, and it works flawlessly across all the latest Android devices. This includes the Galaxy Note 2, HTC One with Sense, the Galaxy S4 running TouchWIZ and even the Galaxy S3.
You can download and install the APK on your Android device from here. The APK installation does not require any kind of root access or any other hackery, and you just need to press the Install button. While I doubt this camera app will find many takers, except for the Nexus 4 owners, it does include Photosphere, which is a good enough reason to keep the app installed.
If you are running CM10.1, you might need to delete/uninstall the existing Gallery.apk before you can install this app.
