Back at its Nexus 7 and Chromecast launch event, the Google Play team announced that it would be bringing digital text books to the Play Store for purchase as well as for rent sometime in August. Well, the day has finally arrived and Android owners can now buy or rent digital text books from Google Play.

Currently, the Play Books section in the Play Store contains digital text-books from well known publishers such as Pearson, Wiley, Macmillian Higher Education, Random House, McGraw-Hill and Cengage Learning. However, only a few text books from various publishers are available for rent. Unlike Apple, none of the text books are interactive in nature, and are mere digital copies of their hard copies.

As of now, the text books are only available in the US Play Store. You can use Google Play Books, that received a pretty nice update today, on any of your Android device to read your purchased or rented text books.
