Before Samsung even announced the Galaxy Note 3, there were rumors floating around the internet saying that there would be a budget version of the device that had slightly lower specifications, but kept the Note 3’s design language. Documents obtained by GSM Arena have now shed some light on the device, which will apparently be called the “Galaxy Note 3 Neo”.
First thing that’ll change is the screen. Goodbye 5.7 inch 1080p AMOLD panel, hello 5.55 inch 720p AMOLED panel. Next up is the processor. Kiss that Snapdragon 800 on the check, because it’s gone. It’ll be replaced by a Samsung made processor that has six cores. Two will be clocked at 1.7 GHz, while four will be clocked at 1.3 GHz. If I had to guess, I’d say the two 1.7 GHz cores are ARM’s Cortex A15, while the four core cluster is ARM’s Cortex A7. The 13 megapixel camera also goes, replaced with an 8 megapixel sensor, RAM goes from 3 GB to 2 GB, and the battery shrinks from 3200 mAh to 3100 mAh.
When will Samsung announce this thing? Good question. My gut tells me Mobile World Congress, but this is Samsung we’re talking about. They could publish a press release tomorrow for all I know.
Should you buy it? Depending on the price. That’s the key here. The Note 3 Neo will retain the same S-Pen features as the original Note 3, meaning it’s going to have that expensive Wacom technology integrated. If I had to guess, I’d say you should expect a 500 Euro price tag at a minimum. While it certainly makes sense to spend another 200 Euros to buy the higher end model, the Note 3 Neo will appeal to people who simply can not make that 200 Euro jump.
In other words, the Note 3 Neo is the iPhone 5c. Cute, but most want the fancier one.
