Cyanogen team has always been known for offering customisations and tinkering options to advanced users. However, with their latest offering called “MOD”, the company is taking things to a whole new level.
With MOD, Cyanogen is giving access to developers to parts of Android OS that were previously inaccessible. This includes the Dialer and other low-level hardware features. Using the tools and APIs provided by Cyanogen, developers can create their own mods to better integrate their apps, products and services within CyanogenOS.
The launch partner of Cyanogen’s MOD is none other than Microsoft, which announced a bunch of new mods that better integrate its service into the former’s OS. For example, the Skype mod directly integrates Skype into the stock Dialer app of Android, while the OneNote mod makes it possible to directly jot down a in it while you are on a call. TrueCaller also demoed their mod which filters your incoming messages to reduce spam text messages.
Cyanogen’s SVP of global partnerships, Vikram Natarajan, says that mods could ultimately allow you to play a game from your lock screen. Cyanogen also has a few hardware companies onboard, though it will only be revealing their names later this week.
Cyanogen will be bringing its MOD platform to devices running Cyanogen OS 13 that will start rolling out next month.
