Corning today announced a new iteration of its popular Gorilla Glass for future smartphones. Gorilla Glass 6 is more durable than Gorilla Glass 5 with Corning saying it can withstand drops up to two times better than its predecessor.
Corning says that Gorilla Glass 6 can withstand up to 15 drops from a 1m height before it actually cracks. The company has managed to make Gorilla Glass even stronger by using a new glass composition that has been chemically strengthed for higher levels of compression. While there’s no improvement in terms of scratch resistance, Gorilla Glass 6 also has other improvements to ensure it meets the rapidly changing needs of OEMs.

“As consumers become more dependent on their smartphones, the opportunity for potentially damaging drops is also on the rise. Now more than ever, it’s critical the cover glass provides outstanding protection,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass. “Corning Gorilla Glass 6 improves upon Gorilla® Glass 5 by surviving drops from higher heights, but, more importantly, has been engineered to survive multiple drops.”
Gorilla Glass 6 is being evaluated by multiple customers, and it should make its way into devices due for release in the next few months.
