Corning Gorilla Glass 5

Corning officially announced Gorilla Glass 4 back in 2014, and now the company’s back with an even more impressive toughened display.

The company has officially announced Gorilla Glass 5, and states that the latest generation of its strengthened panels survives up to four times better than competing glass designs. In its testings, Gorilla Glass 5 survived up to 80 percent of the time when it was dropped face down on rough surfaces, from distances up to 5.25 feet.

Corning states that the new Gorilla Glass is available right now commercially, and that “leading global brands” will launch devices with the new display on built in later this year.

It’s likely that we’ll see quite a few Android devices launched in the coming months featuring Gorilla Glass 5, so it’s good to hear that the drop survivability has gone up quite a bit.
