On Thursday, July 2, Chevrolet officially introduced a brand new feature into a few of its 2016 model year vehicles, which will hopefully keep some owners’ phones from overheating while charging.
The new technology is called “Active Phone Cooling,” and it takes advantage of the air conditioning already equipped in the vehicle in an effort to keep the phone cool while it’s wirelessly charging inside a vehicle. Designers at Chevy apparently discovered that in some cases, where extreme heat was present within a car’s cabin, a phone would either stall its charging, or simply shutoff altogether.
To avoid this, and to keep the phone cool in general, the APC will set cool air from the vehicle’s ventilation system directly to the phone, cooling it down from the outside. The feature will only turn on once the HVAC system has been initiated.
The vehicles that are equipped with this feature include the 2016 Impala and Malibu, as well as the 2016 Cruze and Volt.
