In an interview with CNet, BlackBerry’s CEO John Chen has confirmed that the company will release at least one new product and probably a second Android running smartphone this year.
For the foreseeable future though, BlackBerry will not be releasing phones that will be powered by its own BlackBerry 10 OS. The company has realised that demand for BB10 is almost non-existent, and whether it likes it or not, it makes for sense for it to launch phones that are running Android. The CEO does hope that the Priv makes BlackBerry’s smartphone business viable once again, which will eventually allow it to again release BB10 powered smartphones.
As for Priv, Chen said that the company is taking a “cautiously optimistic” view for it. While the phone managed to garner quite a bit of limelight and consumer interest during its launch month, it is the next few months that will determine its success or failure. The consumer interest in that phone should last for at least a few months for the phone to sell in considerable numbers.
In that aspect, BlackBerry shot itself in the foot by launching the Priv exclusively on AT&T’s network in the United States. Chen, however, justifies the company’s decision by saying that it simply did not have enough resources to do a massive rollout of the phone. Nonetheless, BlackBerry is slowly but steadily working on expanding the availability of Priv to more markets. This includes launching the handset on Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile’s network in the U.S., as well as expanding its availability to 31 additional countries over the next few quarters. Chen also said that the price of the handset, which is currently at $699, will go down over time.
Lastly, the CEO noted that he is confident that BlackBerry’s smartphone division will turn a profit in 2016, otherwise the company might think of selling its smartphone business.
