The Priv is BlackBerry’s first Android device, and despite its high price tag, it is an impressive smartphone that comes with a slide-out keyboard. If you were planning on buying a Priv, but were worried whether the device will receive regular updates or not, the latest announcement from BlackBerry will definitely help in making your decision easier.

In its announcement, BlackBerry has provided details about its Android vulnerability patch program, which it says is “second to none in the industry.” The program consists of three initiatives: Android monthly security updates; “hotfix” patching; and Enterprise-managed updates.

Under monthly Android security updates, BlackBerry will be releasing monthly updates to users who purchase the Priv directly through its online store and to resellers and carriers who have agreed to take part in this program from the company. These OTA updates will fix any newly discovered security exploit in Android, the details of which will be forwarded to BlackBerry by Google.

If there is a security exploit that is very dangerous in nature and needs to be patched immediately, BlackBerry might roll out a “hotfix” to patch them. The roll out of an hotfix will depend on the severity of the exploit, complexity of the patch, and the relative timing to the monthly update cycle.

By using BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and OTA management systems, BlackBerry aims to provide ITs with control over when to roll out software updates for the Priv. This way they will be able to avoid any kind of software incompatibilities that usually ends up costing them thousands of dollars.

Actions always speak louder than words though, so it will be interesting to see if BlackBerry is able to deliver on its words or not. The Priv will be available on AT&T’s network in the United States starting from tomorrow.
