BlackBerry today has started rolling out an update for the BlackBerry Messenger app for Android that brings with it a complete Material Design makeover and a number of new privacy related settings.

The app has been redesigned from the ground up, and now features an eye popping theme with bold colors and an easier to use interface.

With this update, BlackBerry is also retiring its Timed and Retracted Messages in favor of Private Chat. Chats sent as private will hide all personal information of the sender, and they can be timed as well so the chat ends automatically after a specified amount of time. You now also have an option to edit your message, which will automatically retract the message you had sent initially.

The Private and Control bundle costs $0.99 per month, and if you are currently subscribed to Timed and Retracted messages, you will be automatically upgraded to the former at no additional cost.

Other changes included in the update are as follows:

  • Added a new way to organize your ever-growing sticker collection

  • Implemented a new “quote message” feature so you can reference previous messages in your chat

  • Updated the way font sizes are rendered on iOS. iPhone users are going to love that their BBM font size is based on the size selected in system settings.

Do you still use BlackBerry Messenger or have you shifted to WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger?
