A week ago, the BlackBerry team released the official BBM client on the Android and iOS App Stores. Today, the team announced in a blog post that they have had a very successful launch of the app across both the platforms, which saw more than 20 million people joining the service.

The BBM app on the Play Store had crossed the 5 million download mark within the first 8 hours hours of being released, so this number does seem to be on the low side. With the addition of 20 million users, BlackBerry claims that the active BBM user base is now more than 80 million users big.

During its launch week, the BBM app was among the top free apps on the Google Play Store in more than 35 countries. The team also announced that it has removed the virtual line-up from the BBM app across both the platforms, so new users can download, sign up and start using the service instantly.

The blog post suggests that the BBM team still has a few trick up their sleeves which they will share with its users over the “coming months.”
