Back when I was a PC user, there was only one computer brand I trusted: IBM. Every ThinkPad laptop I purchased from them came with one of the best keyboards to ever be designed in the history of keyboard making. Smack-dab in the middle of their keyboards there was a little stick that you could use as a mouse. They call it a “TrackPoint”.

Now IBM knows that one size doesn’t fit all, so with every ThinkPad they shipped a tiny plastic bag that came with three or four TrackPoints, each with a different texture. My favorite was the one that looked like a salad bowl. My best friend swears by the one that looks like a pencil eraser. It doesn’t matter though, because there was a choice.

Which brings me to Samsung. Some people, hell, most people, hate the “slimy” feeling plastic that the South Korean company uses for their smartphones. Since Samsung makes sure that all their devices have a removable battery, that got me thinking, why not simply sell battery covers with different textures?

Samsung already sells replacement battery covers in the form of flip covers. To install a flip cover on your Samsung phone, you literally rip off your old battery door and slap on this new case that comes with a handy cloth screen protector. The original battery cover for my Note II, it’s sitting in a box in my closet with the original plastic on it since I decided to buy a flip cover during same time I purchased my device.

Would creating a textured cover show a sign of weakness? Absolutely not. Nokia popularized replaceable colorful phone cases more than a decade ago. It wouldn’t hurt to setup a factory that used a slightly different mold for people who want a dimpled back cover, or a wavy back cover, or why not a cover with soft touch plastic?

What I’m suggesting can’t be too ludicrous, can it?
