Wi-Fi Calling allows users to make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages, while connected to a Wi-Fi network, instead of the cellular network.
Up until recently, AT&T only offered Wi-Fi Calling on Apple’s iPhones, but that’s finally changing. The Big Blue carrier has officially announced that owners of the LG G4, the manufacturer’s Android flagship from last year, can expect to find Wi-Fi Calling support on their device beginning today. Specifically, a notification will arrive on the G4 letting owners know that support is now available, so if you have the device, keep an eye out for the notification.
AT&T also notes that the Wi-Fi Calling feature is only offered to post-paid subscribers, so it isn’t available to pre-paid customers at this time.
While the LG G4 is the only Android device that supports Wi-Fi Calling right now for AT&T, the carrier does plan on broadening support soon — unfortunately, no exact dates or devices were announced just yet.
Still, it’s a start.
