Almost all Android devices released this year support Qualcomm’s Quick Charge technology and they all claim that they are the fastest charging smartphone in the market. But which smartphone charges the fastest?
To test the claims of various OEMs out there, Tom’s Guide did an exhaustive comparison of charging speeds between some of the most popular Android smartphones released this year. This includes the Samsung Galaxy S6, Asus Zenfone 2, Motorola Droid Turbo, LG G4, Google Nexus 6, OnePlus 2, and the iPhone 6.
The publication calculated the time taken by a phone to charge from 0-100 percent and also timed the charge of the battery at 5 minutes, 15 minutes and 30 minutes intervals. Considering that Quick Charge is meant to quickly charge the nearly depleted battery of your smartphone to a respectable level, this testing scenario makes more sense.
In their testing, Tom’s Guide found that after being charged for only 5 minutes, the Zenfone 2 battery had charged to a staggering 17 percent. Other devices like the Galaxy S6, Nexus 6, LG G4 and OnePlus were left far behind with only 11 or 12 percent charge. The iPhone 6 faired the worse though and had only charged to 6 percent after spending 5 minutes on the charger.
The scenario was pretty much the same after 15 minutes with the Zenfone 2 battery charge now jumping to 32 percent. The Galaxy S6’s adaptive fast charging technology flexed its muscles though as its battery charge increased to 27 percent. The Google Nexus 6, LG G4 and the Droid Turbo battery charge had increased to 22-25 percent range, with the OnePlus 2 and iPhone 6 jointly coming in last with 20 percent charge.
After 30 minutes of charging though, the scenario was slightly different. The Samsung Galaxy S6 caught up with the Zenfone 2 and both devices jointly came in first and had 53 percent charge. The Nexus 6 came in second with 44 percent charge, while the LG G4 came in third with 42 percent charge. The iPhone 6 continued its dismal performance and once again ranked towards the bottom of the chart and had only charged to 36 percent after 30 minutes. The OnePlus 2 came in last though as its battery charge had only increased to 34 percent after spending half an hour connected to a wall charger.
The Galaxy S6 took the crown in reaching the 80-percent battery charge as well as in reaching the 1oo-percent mark. While the Zenfone 2 was the second fastest device to charge to 80 percent, its charging speed dropped dramatically after that and it took another 45 minutes to top off its battery. The LG G4 took advantage of this and became the second fastest device to charge to 100 percent after the Galaxy S6. The real surprise, however, were the OnePlus 2 and the iPhone 6, both of which took more than 2 hours to charge to their full capacity. While the OnePlus 2 took 2 hours and 10 minutes to charge to 100 percent, the iPhone 6 took a staggering 2 hours and 35 minutes for the same. Keep in mind that the iPhone 6 has the smallest battery size in this comparison, so technically it should have been among the fastest devices in the shootout to reach the 100 percent mark.
Nonetheless, in the end, Tom’s Guide crowned the Asus Zenfone 2 as the winner of the test. This is because not only did the device had the highest amount of charge after the 5 and 15 minutes mark, it also has a significantly bigger battery than the Galaxy S6.
