ASUS ROG Phone 2

Asus today unveiled the ROG Phone II, an out-and-out gaming phone. It is also the first phone to come with the recently announced Snapdragon 855 Plus chip from Qualcomm.

In every way, the ROG Phone II is a beast of a phone. Below are some of its key specs:

  • 6.59-inch 120Hz AMOLED display
  • Snapdragon 855 Plus @ 2.96GHz
  • 12GB RAM, 512GB UFS 3.0 NAND
  • 6000mAh battery
  • RGB Lighting
  • Dual USB-C ports
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Dual vibration motors
  • 30W fast charging
  • 24MP front camera
  • 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor, f/1.75 aperture
  • 13MP ultra-wide angle
  • In-display fingerprint scanner
  • Dual front-facing stereo speakers

The 6.59-inch 120Hz AMOLED display is definitely going to be power hungry but Asus was smart enough to pack a massive 6000mAh battery on the phone as well. This will ensure that the phone is able to last through a few hours of intense gaming session easily. The display also has 10-bit HDR support so compatible games are going to look stunning.

The bigger catch with the 120Hz display is that only a couple of games support it. There’s no word on when the likes of Fortnite and PUBG will support 120Hz displays.

Asus also claims that it has managed to reduce the touch latency of the display to 48ms. This makes it among the first phone in the market to launch with a sub-50ms latency.

All the blitz from the original ROG Phone is also present on its successor. It comes with a metal and glass design, RGB lighting, and dual USB-C ports. The inclusion of the second USB-C port will ensure that one can play games on the phone without worrying about the cable coming in between.

The phone also has dual vibration motors and four microphones. Asus says this will ensure proper feedback while gaming and that your friends will be able to listen to your voice irrespective of how you hold the phone.

This time around, Asus has also focused on the camera. The ROG Phone II comes with a 48MP f/1.75 aperture at the rear and a 13MP ultra-wide angle camera. At the front, there’s a 24MP selfie camera.

On the software front, the ROG Phone II will come with the same gaming-inspired UI that the original ROG shipped with. However, this time around, Asus is offering users an option to switch to a stock Android-like UI during setup.

Asus has also launched a bunch of accessories to go along with the ROG Phone II. Some of the accessories that launched with the original ROG Phone are also compatible with the ROG Phone II.

The ROG Phone II goes on sale in China from July 23rd, with the international launch expected to happen in the first week of September.
