Andy Rubin is a man of many talents. He started a “smartphone” company called Danger way before smartphones were even a thing. Then he started Android, which Google later acquired. And then suddenly, without any rhyme or reason, he announced that he was bored and wanted to try something new. Thanks to The New York Times, we now know more details about his latest project. He, and a bunch of other Google employees, are working on building robots.

Andy’s group has so far purchased seven different companies, with the goal of creating machines to automate manufacturing, logistics, and tasks that normally require a whole bunch of people. In other words, Andy is working on the robots that will build and deliver your next smartphone or tablet.

When will we see these robots? Probably never. Amazon will buy them to stick them in their warehouses. Foxconn will buy them and put them in their factories. FedEx will buy them and install them in their busiest shipping hubs. These aren’t iRobot type androids, in case that’s what you’re thinking.

How then is this related to Android? It isn’t, not in the slightest bit, but it’s nice to see Andy again. He was the face of Google’s mobile operating system for years, and then poof, he left. Hugo Barra replaced him, but then he left to go to Xiaomi. Who’s going to be the next man or woman we associate with Android? We might have to wait until Google I/O 2014 to find out.
