While other companies, like Samsung and Apple, already offer the ability to use their mobile payment options on their smartwatches, Google’s Android Wear is still missing the feature.
But according to Android Police, based on documentation found within the latest Google Play Store APK, that could be changing soon. The information indicates that Google is preparing the user interface on Android Wear to support Android Pay, as it relates to holding the watch over a payment terminal.
Nothing is confirmed just yet, but it would seem likely that Android Wear could get Android Pay support with the upcoming Android Wear 2.0 update, set to arrive in early 2017. It would also make sense for the timing, considering that Google is rumored to be launching its own Android Wear-based wearables, and that new hardware would need to be offered by companies like Motorola and Huawei. The wearables will need to support NFC, and many Android Wear smartwatches don’t right now (with the ASUS ZenWatch lineup being the exception.)
Would you use your Android Wear watch to use Android Pay at checkout?
