Google today announced its plan of launching Android Pay in the UK in the coming few months. At launch, Android Pay will support MasterCard and Visa credit/debit cards from majority of the financial institutions in the UK.
This includes Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA and Nationwide Building Society. The only notable major UK bank missing from this list is Barclay’s, which took its own sweet time in supporting Apple Pay as well. Android Pay will across major retailers in UK, and can also be used on the Tube, buses and trains.
In its announcement, Google also revealed that 1.5 million users are registering for Android Pay in the United States every month. To make the service gain more traction, the company is adding support for retailers like Best Buy, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, and it is also teaming up with Plenti to make it easier to earn and redeem loyalty points.
Up until now, Android Pay has only been available in the United States. Reports had previously claimed that Google will be launching Android Pay in the UK by March, and while the company has not made a ‘hard’ launch today, it is at least good to know that the service will be launching in the UK in the coming months.
