In a move that is going to surprise many, OnePlus today announced that it will be updating its two-year-old OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T to Android P.
The company had announced its software update schedule last month which pointed to the OnePlus 3 and 3T reaching their end of life in terms of Android OS updates with the Android Oreo update.
Today, however, OnePlus has announced that it will be directly updating the OnePlus 3 and 3T to Android P instead of updating it to Android 8.1 Oreo.
The company says that it has taken this decision after internal discussions and evaluations. This move will also allow the company to offer more features and improvements to OnePlus 3 and 3T users.
OnePlus will be rolling out the Android P update for the OnePlus 6 first followed by OnePlus 5/5T and OnePlus 3/3T. This likely means that the OnePlus 3 and 3T will receive the Android P update in Q1 next year.
While not quick, this news should make plenty of OnePlus 3 and 3T owners happy. Android P comes with plenty of new features including AI-powered battery saving optimization called Adaptive Battery, App Actions, Dashboard, Wind Down, new navigation gestures, and more.
The update will breathe a fresh lease of life in the OnePlus 3 and 3T. Given that the OnePlus 3 and 3T were both priced at less than $400, it is commendable to see OnePlus roll out a third major Android OS update for the handsets more than two years of its release. Perhaps its time other OEMs took notice of this and also promise to do something similar for their devices.
