In an interview with OnePlus’ community manager Oliver Z, the company has confirmed that Android O will be the last OS update that the OnePlus 3 and 3T will get. While Android 8.0 will mark the end of OS updates for these two handsets, OnePlus promises to roll out security updates for them for the “foreseeable future.”
In addition, the company will also continue rolling out updates to its system apps on both devices.
Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates. After the OP3/3T have been updated to Android O, we’ll start moving the Open Beta Program from OP3/3T to OP5.
This news is certainly not going to go down well with existing OnePlus 3/3T owners. Once the Android O update does land on the handset, they would have received two major Android updates — Android 7.0 and 8.0. While this might be good enough for the OnePlus 3, the OnePlus 3T is still only around nine months old at this point and should have received another Android OS update down the line.
On the other hand, do remember that after Android O, the next major Android update will only land in Q3-Q4 of 2018. By that time, the OnePlus 3/3T would be well over two years old.
