Along with the new Nexus 7, Google introduced a new version of Jelly Bean – Android 4.3. The new Jelly Bean update mainly brings under-the-hood changes such as OpenGL ES 3.0 and Bluetooth Smart support.

For tablets, Google has also enhanced the multi-user support, introduced in Android 4.2, with restricted profiles. This will allow users to restrict access to apps, or even provide limited access to IAPs in games and apps. There is also support for Bluetooth Smart or Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy devices.

Under-the-hood changes include OpenGL ES 3.0 support, which should help game developers to provide more life-like graphics experiences for games. Apart from this, there is a new DRM API that will allow content providers like Netflix to stream 1080p videos to the new Nexus 7 more securely and faster. On the security side, Google has added SELinux support for better security against potential vulnerabilities.

Apart from the above mentioned changes, Android 4.3 does not really bring any major new features. There are tons of minor new features like background Wi-Fi location reporting, hidden notification history and smoother animations etc. You can read what’s new in Android 4.3 Jelly Bean here.

The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is rolling out to the old Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Galaxy Nexus, and the Nexus 4 beginning from today. The HTC One and the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition will get the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update sometime soon.
