Gen Z and millennials tend to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technology more than Gen Xers and baby boomers, a survey by American Express (Amex) revealed.
The Amex survey, which included over 1,100 small business “financial decision-makers” as respondents, found that the use of AI in small businesses varies significantly across generations—with around 60% of millennial and Gen Z participants already adopting AI for several tasks, while only 34% was recorded among Gen X and baby boomers participants.
Overall, all respondents find common ground in the use of AI in customer data analysis, chatbots, virtual assistants, and content creation. However, the survey also points to a clear divide across generational lines in terms of how AI is used.
Younger generations assign more responsibilities to automated technology than older generations do. Particularly, Gen Z and millennials commonly use AI for task automation and cash-flow analytics, while baby boomers and Gen Xers turn to AI for security and workforce management, among other things.
The survey results show that older Americans mostly remain skeptical about artificial intelligence, and while younger people have shown more interest, they are still taking things a bit slower than expected.
In June, a report showed that only 4% of Gen Z individuals regularly utilize AI tools. Likewise, a study from Washington State University found that consumers are more likely to buy products unrelated to AI if given a choice.
True enough, the survey provides important data about the generational divide in terms of AI use in small businesses. Though not part of the poll, the gathered information could be used to determine whether or not adopting AI would make a business more profitable.
