1 billion 30-day active Android users, 93 million selfies taken each day

Well, Google I/O is underway, with Android head Sundar Pichai having taken the stage to talk about the usage numbers for Google’s mobile operating system, a detail that we get at the start of I/O each year. This time, Google is making changes to the way they look at Android usage around the world, and has released quite a few impressive figures.

The biggest change is the switch from calculating total device activations to 30-day active users – Android currently has 1 billion active users over a period of 30 days, a huge number any way you look at it. Furthermore, Android users send over 20 billion text messages each day, take 93 million selfies (with 4 million of them sporting duck faces), and take out their device 100 billion times.

Google also talked about Android tablets, revealing that Android tablet shipments currently stand at 62 percent of total tablet shipped, up from 46 percent last year. User engagement has increased as well, with app installs up by over 200 percent and 42 percent of YouTube usage coming from Android tablets.
