Early today, both Hasbro and Rovio officially announced the cross-over between Transformers and Angry Birds, called Angry Birds Transformers. The new property will boast the launch of the Autobirds and Deceptihogs as they do battle not just in a new mobile-focused game, but also in a new toy line, and other consumer-focused physical products that people will be able to get their hands on later this year.
According to John Frascotti, Chief Marketing Officer at Hasbro, it’s all about new ways for fans of both series to engage with both brands: “Angry Birds Transformers provides fans worldwide with a fun, new story and characters, and innovative ways, like our TELEPODS platform, for consumers to engage with the brand. We collaborated with Rovio to create opportunities for kids and families to experience Autobirds and Deceptihogs across multiple formats and entertainment platforms, for a completely immersive branded experience.”
The use of Hasbro’s TELEPODS means that anyone who picks up the corresponding Angry Birds Transformers physical figurines can use their device’s camera to “teleport” the character into their game directly. The same gameplay bonus has been used in other Angry Birds games, including Angry Birds Star Wars II, and the recently launched Angry Birds Go! cart racing game.
Unfortunately there isn’t a launch date just yet, but the press release does say later this year, so it could very well be a holiday release. There is an official teaser site up and running, but it’ll only give you a nice big image of the new Angry Birds Transformers, as well as bold text at the bottom telling you it’ll be launching for app stores soon.
What do you think of the Angry Birds brand? Are you a fan of all the newer games the company has launched, and do these cross-over mash-ups appeal to you?
